Whats the best advice you've been given to gain happiness and inner peace, did it work and why ?

It can be a spiritual thing or just plain old common sense in every day life. Maybe it was something you read in a book or was told by a friend. How did you start to improve your life and how soon did you feel the benefit?Whats the best advice you've been given to gain happiness and inner peace, did it work and why ?
When I was in the 7th grade I attempted suicide and when I was in the hospital my grandparents came to see me. They didn't stay long but my grandfather looked me right in the eye and said he loved me. And I realized at that point in time that so many people loved me and I had everything to live for. So I changed my habits and decided that trying to be uncool was really..uncool. So I just started being myself. When I got my last report card for high school he told me he way very proud of me and that I can be anything I want and that he's proud I want to be a doctor because he always wanted to be one. He's never told any other cousins of mine that he's proud of them so it really meant a lot.Whats the best advice you've been given to gain happiness and inner peace, did it work and why ?
I love your question. A good one has always been ';love yourself.';

I also learned from a counselor to just feel the energy and life throughout your body starting from your head to your feet, to enjoy every moment of life.

Another good thing I learned is meditation. When I wasn't getting along with my mother and sister I was asked to visualized them covered in horrible black stuff and imagine me being the key to it all going away and making them happy again. You can change the visual to anything that helps you :D
There was this book i saw with the title:Change your thoughts,Change your world....i thought about it and it made clear sense.Also,i LOVE caring for people and giving as much time as i am able to helping someone out,that makes me feel really good inside. :) (I felt the benefit immediately after helping people,i've always cared but after actually starting to help was the huge feeling of benefit.) The changing thoughts takes a bit longer,but if i keep on it,it really does work.
seriously a few years ago,sitting at the back of a friends car coming back from clubbing ,it was early morning and we pulled up to the traffic lights and next to us was a rolls royce so we started to jeering the guy up by saying what a nice car it was,he replied very simply by saying ..work hard,just work hard and you get your rewards my friends started calling him names after that bit of advice, i for 1 took his advice and it turned out the best advice i was ever given.
There are a couple of things that helped me tremendously. One of them is what my father in law used to say ';never lose your joy';. The other is to live for today, for that is all we can do anything about, yesterday is past and tomorrow is not promised. Trying to live for this day and find joy in the small things in life has helped me come from a very dark place to a place where I have hope, count my blessings instead of my problems and try to enjoy each day as it comes. It's not easy sometimes but it is worth making the effort.
Admitting (23 years after the fact) all the crap I thought and did .It brought the most liberating of circumstances. But at the same time I realized had I did it YEARS ago, the worst of my lifes circumstances would have never came to be. Always remember, you will suffer the circum stances of the decisions you make.
';Good things come to those who wait';. Bull if you ask me ! In this life, in this society and times, you go and get what you want ! Time flies by so quickly and so do years !
i just started treating myself better, stop putting yourself down all the time. just live one day at a time.
