If you get a public defender do you really get the best legal advice and defense?

I a just wondering because those types of lawyers get too many cases not enough time. I am not judging I was just just wondering if I needed a public defender if I was getting what I am entitled to.If you get a public defender do you really get the best legal advice and defense?
Within the public defender's office, like in the civilian world, there are good and not-so-good attorneys. So, in some cases it's the roll of the dice.





In MY experience, with 10 years as a probation officer, the ones who aren't great don't promote well... so the better attorney you are, the more you advance within the department... so the more serious the charges (to a certain degree) the more highly thought of the Deputy PD is.





Also, in Juvenile Delinquency cases, there is usually 1 or more public defenders assigned to oversee all juvenile delinquency matters... That's what they do full-time. Unless the case is EXTREMELY serious, folks are better off using a public defender who is familiar with the in's and out's of juvenile court. Recently a highly-paid private attorney walked in and sat down next to me in juvenile court, and asked me where we keep the plea forms. I had to explain to him that the Court is not allowed to entertain/accept plea bargains in juvenile matters. Later that week he called me to get my thoughts on different avenues he might want to pursue with the case... Me. The Probation Officer. He was making BANK and the kid would be FAR better off with a public defender who knows juvenile court well.If you get a public defender do you really get the best legal advice and defense?

I interned at a PDs office and yes they do have a LARGE amount of cases.





Some attorneys actually care about their clients and are GOOD at what they do in my experience about 1/5 the others were busy and didn't seem to care that much because they have TONS of other cases.





But that one attorney is the reason I want to be an attorney too :) She was awesome all her clients loved her and she cared plus she was good at it.
my son got a court appointed lawyer , a very serious charge and he did not do squat for him . i hired another lawyer . i had to max my credit card but at least i think the lawyer that i hired is not just sleeping. remember who pays for your public defender ,whos side will he be on if the other side is paying the bill. good luck on fairness i haven't seen it around here ever.
a public defender gets paid by the state, for those who usually can't afford a lawyer, i don't see why they would like to lose , some public defenders are supreme court justices and judges who started as public defenders !
Only if his/her other 150 cases disappear.


You meet them for 5 minutes before your court appearance and can never reach them by phone.


Plus if its takes awhile to settle your case you may have many different attny's.
In most states attorneys are required to take on a certain number of cases pro bono (free) so it's not always the over worked court appointed ones.
