What advice would you give to Dr. Gates to keep the cop from slapping on the cuffs?

One old white woman on the radio suggests to always be polite to a cop, ';Yes, officer here is my ID.'; ';Thank you, officer for protecting me.';What advice would you give to Dr. Gates to keep the cop from slapping on the cuffs?

Be it Dr Gates or anyone else, my strongest recommendation would be:





1) Don't attempt to adjudicate your issue on the street with the officer...he/she is not the judge and jury. He/she is only doing their job!





2) Losing your temper simply because you don't like cops or don't understand an issue...refer to #1.





3) Don't misunderstand an officers ';cautiousness'; for ';arrogance.';





4) If asked for identification, don't assume that you don't have to present it. . .you do!





5) Always remember two-way communication between human beings is always better than one-way transportation to jail for disorderly conduct.
I wonder how these observant neighbors of his didn't recognize him instantly instead of calling the police.





If after pulling out my ID, the cops still didn't believe him, maybe he could have directed him to various photographs around the house. Surely burglars don't plant pictures in the house before they rob it. I understand and appreciate the cops' diligence but for crying out loud, what's my ID good for if it doesn't prove who I am?
gates was the real racist in this instance. a racist with a damn whipping boy complex. were he as successful inwardly as he is outwardly, he coulda gone on with his day in a jiffy.





instead hes gotta prove something. instead hes gotta bring attention to himself and get loud! he didnt look so pissed in his mugshot though. he looked like he was gonna cry.

Well when your asked to do something from an officer DO IT THE FIRST TIME ASKED AND DON'T GIVE THEM CRAP.
I would've told Dr. Gates to just remain calm but he did show I.D. and it was his house so who knows...
